NYCEDC – Resident Engineering and Inspection Services for the West 8th Street Station Access Project
JED Engineering was retained as a sub consultant to provide resident engineering inspection for this high profile infrastructure project. The Surf Avenue / W8th Street Pedestrian Bridge provides access to the Boardwalk and the Aquarium from the West 8th Street subway station.
The connection is inefficient for pedestrians who wish to cross Surf Avenue and not be routed directly to the Boardwalk; the current configuration routes pedestrians nearly 300 yards out of the core amusement area. The project involved the demolition of the structurally deficient existing pedestrian bridge. The Coney Island West 8th Street Station Access Project will improve pedestrian connections in the Coney Island Amusement Area and to the WCS New York Aquarium, through the demolition of the Surf Avenue/West 8th Street pedestrian bridge, through improvements to the at-grade crossing of West 8th Street and Surf Avenue, by creating improved connections to the Coney Island Boardwalk, and through landscaping and urban design improvements along Surf Avenue between West 5th Street and Stillwell Avenue.
