CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT SERVICES FOR THE SANDY RECOVERY PROGRAM AT ALFRED SMITH HOUSES

JED Engineering is serving as a sub-consultant to STV, providing construction management servicesat one of NYCHA’s largest housing developments in Manhattan.

On October 29, 2012, superstorm Sandy, with its historical storm surge, caused major damage, centered on building systems and building areas that were susceptible to flooding. As a result, the Alfred Smith development bore the brunt of serious damages, to building mechanical systems, electrical distribution, plumbing valves, pumps and piping.

This contract will address a projected increase in flood risk, stemming from continued sea level rise due to climate change and more extreme storm surge events, enforcing the need to harden NYCHA’s infrastructure to reduce the probability of damage, service disruptions, and environmental impacts from surge events. The general project scope will include:

  • Flood proofing above Advisory Base Flood Elevation to protect the building envelop
  • Installation of backup generators to maintain electricity during power outages
  • Replacement of damaged boilers and new raised boiler room along with damaged mechanical equipment associated with the boiler and hot water systems
  • Replacement and relocation of affected electrical equipment; roof replacements
  • Replacement of damaged, submerged, site-wide, underground conduits, feeders and site lighting
  • Restoration of the grounds to pre-disaster conditions

Construction Cost: $55M
